The Himig Collection

The Filipinas Heritage Library is home to over 1,000 vinyl records of original Filipino music. Known as the Himig Collection, this collection began with a donation from a private collector and augmented with the permanent loan of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) of its 963 vinyl records of Original Pilipino Music (OPM).

These vintage phonograph records span the decades from the 1920s to the 1980s. Included in them are selections considered as classical, light classical, popular, and indigenous. These aural expressions of the Filipino soul encapsulated in vinyl reminds listeners not only of the artists’ thoughts, joys, and sorrows, but also of the socio-political views which they held through the years.

Aside from offering an extensive assortment of Philippine melodies, the Himig Collection also serves as a collection of album cover art. The artistic value of the collection’s record sleeves lie in the different styles and designs used in the album covers that reflect the social realities and aesthetic tastes of the times to which they belong.

Himig Collection celebrates the ingenuity and creative genius of Filipino musicians through the 20th century. Through it, the Filipinas Heritage Library aims to promote wider appreciation of our local music traditions, making the music from these prized records readily available to the public for research and personal enjoyment.

Come and enjoy the Himig Collection at the Filipinas Heritage Library!

I am one of those avid listeners of Pilipino songs most specially those Kundiman songs. I have no other vices in life except sit down infront of my PC, tune to the YOUTUBE for Pilipino Kundiman songs and listen. I am old enough at the age of 84 but young at heart when it comes to listening Pilipino songs.

I would love to hear Filipino songs especially Kundiman songs. How I wish I was born around 18th century and see lifestyle in Hispanic Philippine era.
